Evaluation of "Brunch" dance

The technical elements and requirements that the dance piece “Brunch” has is release technique in contemporary dance such as suspension, use of gravity, the use of falling and also allowing your body to flow with its self-more such as using the core(the centre of your body) when jumping or swinging. One of the concepts of the dance was that the symbol/main theme of the piece was exhaustion and mourning out of boredom. Equally, the stimulus of the dance was that children was tired and upset of how they had to come to school on a Saturday to go to detention. The overall performance that was presented within the dance was very virtuous. For example, I used the correct technique of contemporary dance release and applied it to my movements throughout the dance piece.

One of my strengths was applying leg extensions through the significant use of release technique that is being applied. For example, one way that this was represented was through doing the cartwheel jump. My leg were pointed and extended up in the air. This represents on how I am applying the technical elements of contemporary dance, extensions towards the stimulus and concept of the dance and contemporary technique as a whole

Another strength that I had was timing and musicality. For example, one attitude and representation of how I showed timing was through listening to the music and following the rhythmic structure of the piece throughout. This is one of the main key elements and essentials towards the dance.

The last strength that I recognised was my spacial awareness towards other dancers on the stage. For instance, one aspect of how this was portrayed is through health and safety. By being aware of other dancers while keeping the same formations and timing show dance application and self application as an individual.

One of my weaknesses that were represented through my dance movement is my use of release technique. For example, one aspect of how this was shown was through letting my body go more and not controlling my movements. A way of how I am going to be improving this is through practicing more release exercises such as the swings and suspensions.

Another weakness that I have noticed is my control through movements. For example, one way of how this was represented is through me placing every movements with what arm the degree goes to. The use of release technique is about flow through the movements. One aspect of how I am going to be improving in this is through more improvisation that I self record myself performing throughout. Which would help me with release technique.

The last weakness that I recognised through brunch is my use of character within the piece. For example, one way that this was shown is through not showing enough expression and portrayal of the theme, "exhaustion" and "boredom" throughout my facial features.

Evaluation of Revelations

In one of the successful dance pieces of Alvin Ailey, “Revelations” I applied a very good level of dance application to the dance. For example, as a contemporary dancer we had to apply different techniques of contemporary such as Graham technique and Horton technique. I applied the dance techniques theoretically significant throughout the three sections of Revelations that I had to perform. By being a very dedicated and hardworking dancer having respectable attendance and punctuality is an essential as a dancer. My self-application as a dancer can be improved by presenting appropriate presentation for instance by being more self-independent as a dancer. Through not always relying on the other dancers around me and what movements they are working on. Nonetheless make sure that I know what I am performing and dancing with the movements and dynamics. This can be improved by practicing what we learn during class time rehearsals and record myself after each lesson. As a result, I would have self-reflecting piece of dance that I performed to watch and look back on and work on outside of class.

One of the improvements that I have mad with my dance technique is using my turn out position and plie more. For example, in the beginning of Revelations the expression that I portrayed through the repetitive motif of extension of my left arm reaching towards the bottom of the left. To go into a wide second turn out position. In addition, it creates emphasise of us 10 dancers dancing in unison. Revelations is first shown with one spotlight on all the dancers at the centre point of the stage. The white spotlight is reflecting on the dynamical silhouettes in unison as well as canon. It reveals more of the main stimulus of Revelations which is salvation and wanting freedom. This which is being portrayed through me reaching out and going into a plie towards the bottom of the floor.

Another improvement that I have noticed is my emotion and expression that I convey in Sinnerman. For example, when we go down to the floor with our arms firing out into a windmill turn. Which is composed with my emotion and mood. To the concept of how Alvin Ailey’s embodiment of Africa as trapped and deserted. By going down to the floor could convey on how Alvin Ailey is exploring the concept of the social progression of slavery and imprisonment that African Americans were going through.

Lastly, the improvement that I recognised through my dance application is my elevation. For instance, when I was performing my own solo in Sinnerman before going back into the trio. When, I was doing my leg extensions my right leg was elevated high. While going into the suspension out using my arms and the centre of my whole body. Consequently, the audience of the imaginable feel of passion and struggle through out Revelations that African Americans were going through.

On the other hand, one of the weaknesses I had when applying self-application is my positioning and extension of my leg. For example, when I was dispersing of our arms and legs going to the floor. My right leg was not fully extended as it was bending and straightening when I was going down to the floor. Furthermore, it demonstrates on how I need to work on the extensions of my legs on the positioning of a diagonal.

Another weakness in my performance through applying contemporary dance technique is showing contraction. For instance, when we use the fan to contract with our chests. This represents that I need to use more contraction and isolation with my chest. The significance of the prop helps to speak out the troubles of being muted and restricted from society. The fan adds more parenthesis to the piece.

All the movements in unison reflects the undeniable strength that the dancers project and give out. By performing the correct movements in unison has allowed me to have very consistent timing. Furthermore, this represents a unity of dancers coming together as one.

In conclusion, the last weakness in my performance was posture. For example, throughout the fan dance section of Revelations my body was shifting off the centre. It presents that I need to use more control throughout the centre of my body.

One of my targets for next term is to work more on my flexibility. By means of doing more stretching exercises at home and at my dance classes in and outside of college.

Revelations

The beginning piece of Revelations required very technical ability in the area of contemporary dance that was being explored throughout the whole of Revelations. One of the contemporary dance technique that I had to explore through Revelations is Graham and Horton technique. Which are considered as very important contemporary dance style techniques and influences towards Alvin Ailey's piece, "Revelations". One of the concepts of this piece is to be all united together. Which is explored and expressed through the unison movements.

One of my strengths that I have recognised is my use of turn out position. For example, this was presented through using the stylistic features of Alvin Ailey's piece to represent on how we are suffering and are imprisoned in a culture of inequality and segregation between the western and African American culture.

Another strength that I have is my leg and arm extensions. For instance, this was explored through the beginning when reaching out towards the floor in a wide deep second position plie. By going to extra technique and dance classes has helped me with my plie and my turn out position. Furthermore, it has also helped me with my extensions and flexibility to go an extended degree.

The last strength that I have recognised is my projection with the whole of my body. For example, one way that this was demonstrated is through how in the beginning section that when our heads are facing towards the ceiling that my chest is lifted up.

One of the weaknesses that I noticed was my use of spotting when I done the turn/transition into the group formation. One element of how I could be working on my spotting while doing turns is to practice turns in contemporary dance in the dance studio. Also, I should film myself when doing the turns to see if i am making improvements in my spotting.

Brunch dance piece

This is one of the dance pieces that required the use of release technique of contemporary dance. "Brunch" dance piece required us to show facial and emotional expression to portray our character with the expression of being bored and mourning out of exhaustion. As, we have to show and explore this through both of our movements and use of facial expression which needs to be projected towards the audience.

One of my strengths that I noticed was my timing with the music and musicality. For example, one way that this was represented is through me counting with the music and doing the movements at the correct time with the correct technique.

Another strength that I have is my leg extensions. For instance, when doing the cartwheel jump my legs were pointed and also turned out in a second position when doing the jump in the air. With the support of a dancers shoulders when I am running into and going to do the jump.

The last strength that  i recognized is my projection. This was presented through me looking up and facing the audience. Also, using my eye line within dance to look up when performing movements and the stylistic qualities  of contemporary dance.

One of my weaknesses was my use of throwing myself more with my body when doing the dance piece. As, I need to release myself more in contemporary dance and use my whole body to flow while suspending my body more. A way of how I can improve on this and be working on my suspension is by doing more core exercises such as planks and sit ups. This would allow the centre of my body to be engaged with.

Another weakness that I have been able to capture is the use of gravity and the centre of my body. For instance, one aspect of how this was illustrated is through me not jumping high enough when the swing and jump before going into the trio image. A way of how I can improve on this is by practicing more jumps and leaps within the dance studio to help me with my height and elevation of the jumps.

In conclusion, the last weakness that I have captured is my elevation and height within jumps. For example, during the transition of when I had to do the contact release technique before going into the trio. An aspect of how I can improve on this is by using more momentum within my jumps. As a result, I'm going to be working on my jumps and practicing contemporary dance exercises such as going into second and first position turn out when jumping.

Working out formations of Alvin Ailey's dance

In our dance class rehearsals we were working on the fan section of revelations. Within the issues in the category such as the formations of the dance and what characteristics and features that have to be applied within the fan dance. This is including gossiping and spreading the news within the church. It emphasises on preaching and reaching out towards everyone. Through this represents power and passion with information that comes from one person then goes towards all. Gossiping within the church explores the cultural heritage of black African American's. It is enduring a social protest that is being explicitly shown and demonstrated through all the griefs to the redemption and joy preached in God's eyes. One aspect of this section of Revelations is that it composes yearn for deliverance and attitudes of how African American's have had so much that they were struggling for.

One of my strengths within the fan dance section of Revelations is my use of the prop to explore the characteristics of the dance piece. For example, one attitude is that the use of the fan is explored as of showing that the news is spreading around all of us. The fan is a form and method of communication throughout the whole dance piece. This section speaks out the troubles of this world. It speaks out an earthly feel of struggle and sorrow through the brown neutral coloured costumes. The atmosphere of this choreography is being described as weightful and a burden to carry out within the dance.

Another strength that I have is my clarity and technicality of the dance movements. For instance, one way that this is being portrayed is through my movements having an range of effective emotion through the repetition of the motifs. It is referring Alvin Ailey's church life. Even though the main aim of church is to praise the lord. In this modern contemporary culture church mostly involves gossip and spreading the news across not only one but all.

The last strength that I have noticed is my turn out and extension of the turn out of the dance. For example, one way that is explored is through by making sure that my legs are turned out in the right position of the dance(i.e. second position extended out). Throughout revelations speak out the truth and also the confidence to believe and reach out for something more which you thought that you can not get or achieve as a black African American citizen.

One of the weaknesses that I have noticed  is my application of Graham technique.

Practicing the Breakfast Club dance in the theatre

In today's dance rehearsals we were working on the use of the spacing and setting of the dance piece with the transitions in the theatre. One of my strengths from being in the theatre to practice and work on the piece is my use of travelling. For example, I had to work on my travelling of the transitions of each section that I am in to travel and go off the stage. The use of moving more with the movement will help me travel more with where I want to get to(which would be off the stage very efficiently and smoothly). Travelling in the Breakfast Club dance piece is seen as one of the key essentials within the dance. Travelling also has to be used to gt us from and to off stage as well. Especially, when we are using it in release technique(to travel with it and to use the movement to release with it. It helps with the attitudes and the choreographic intention of the dance.

Another strength that I noticed from using the theatre in my dance studies during rehearsal time is my extensions in my legs. For example, one way of how this is shown is through by the movement such as the needle jump and the straddle jump that I am lifting my legs to shown extension. Which I am portraying within the dance. Extensions are helping me with the technical field of contemporary dance and with release technique. As, this is known for the suspension and the field that it chooses to carry out using the torso and the centre of the gravitational pull and force of the centre.

The last strength that I have noticed is my use of adapting to the use of the space for the dance piece, "The Breakfast Club". For example, one way of how this was applied was through the use of being able to travel more(if I thought I would not be able to get to or to reach out more if I was too far from my partner/dancers around me). Adapting to any sort of the space which is applicable towards me as a dancer. But towards dancers as a whole within doing dance pieces.

One of the weaknesses that I have noticed is being able to get into the right position of the image that I am suppose to get into. For example, one illustration of how this was represented is through by me being too far in one of the images that was projected on the projector for me to get into. One way of how I could work on getting into the images is by going through a path that I am going to travel into the position. Furthermore, making sure that I am travelling enough to get into the position.

Another weakness that I noticed is the use of my projection of facial expressions of the images. One way of how this is explored is through my use of eye-line and looking more up and forward towards the audience or the angle that the picture is positioned. Which demonstrates the technicalities of placement of body in the correct dance stance.

The last weakness that I noticed is my use of facial and emotional expressions. For example, one way of how this was illustrated is through by me needing to match with the facial expressions. The use of having self efficient facial expressions are seen as the key essential within my dance performance. By practicing the dance more with my eye level above and towards the audience. Also, to showcase energy and also expression within the face which correspond with the movement.

Class rehearsal on revelations

In today’s dance class and rehearsals we were going over each section of which we are doing for revelations such as the fan dance, revelations (beginning section) and sinnerman. Within revelations we have to move through the space and use our whole body including the centre of the torso when doing contractions. Which is one of the key elements of technique that we have to apply to revelations. Alvin Ailey represents this as one of the most important parts within revelations (to show isolations through the movement of contracting and using suspension within the jumps and extensions). That are required within sinnerman the most. As, it is a very fast pace dynamic section of Revelations (it is uplifted and the movements are very explosive and contained). It represents on how Alvin Ailey wants the African American culture to be given the chance to do the same opportunities and chances that the western culture have. It is a journey that black African American's are going through. They were segregated and degraded from the western culture. During, where Alvin Ailey lived Ailey felt entrapped within the western culture. Due to how this culture thought they are more superior and impower of other cultures. Ailey wanted to show through Revelations that everyone should have the same opportunities.

One of my strengths from Revelations is applying my technical skills that are required for contemporary dance such as leg extensions. For example, one way that this was applied was within the section of sinnerman section when I project my body by extending my legs in the air. Extensions is meant to be shown within Revelations to represent on how we are searching, reaching and looking out for freedom. Using extensions within the solo dance that I have in sinnerman is to show poetic and artistic qualities that are meant to be emphasised and expressed within Revelations.

Another strength that I have noticed within Revelations is my turn out position(the placement of my feet). One way that this is being represented is through by in the beginning of Revelations when we had to go into a releve position with our feet in a turn out position. Going into a turn out position represents how we are using the contemporary dance technique to go through Alvin Ailey's movements.

The last strength that I have noticed is my projection of the movement explored within Alvin Ailey's piece. For example, in the beginning section of Revelations I was using my movements to represent and show that I am struggling and in pain searching and looking for freedom. Alvin Ailey expected us to use the movements to represent a path that we are going through. In terms of applying the stylistic qualities that are meant to be in Alvin Ailey's dance piece.

One of the weaknesses that I have noticed is my lack of character within the piece. For example, my movements are exploring and showing that I am suffering looking for a way out. One way of how I can improve and work on my character is through looking at the videos of revelations and the self recorded video of myself in Revelations to compare to see how I can apply more character within my movement and through the performance.

Another weakness that I have noticed is using more emotion through Alvin Ailey's work. For example, I should represent within my facial features that I ease with breathe through the music and that the illustration of suffering is explored and that there is weight on my shoulders that I am carrying out within the world through my dance.

Learning the transitions for the dance

In today's dance class practice and rehearsals we were learning and practicing the transitions for the piece that we are working on. In the transitions of the piece included aspects of floorwork, key motifs that have been used and explored throughout. Also, release technique that has been notified as the key contemporary dance technique that we have to apply through our movement and performance based on the stimulus of the dance.

One of my key strengths that I have noticed is the use of the clarity of the dance movements. For example, one aspect of how this has been performed is through using the right technique of release and applying it within my dance piece. Some of the main technical areas of release technique in contemporary included suspension and also allowing your body to drop and to suspense and using more of the upper part of your torso which that is needed to be used throughout. The strong use of having alignment and posture helps me with performing the correct technique of release and free.

Another strength that I have depicted through myself dancing is my alignment of my legs and arms. For example, one way of how this is presented is through the swings and suspension that I do within the dance. By having a strong alignment with my arms and legs further on helps me with my use of technique of which is needed within the dance. It is presented as the main aspect within the success criteria of the dance.

The last strength that I have noticed is my use of extensions with my legs and arms that has been applied within the release technique style of contemporary. For example, one way of how this is all shown is through by going into the needle and the cartwheel jump(which my legs are placed  further out of each other-into a straddle jump while holding my hands on another dancer). By using my extensions within the piece has helped not only with release technique but also the other technique.

One of the weaknesses that I have noticed is the use of my suspension when releasing in the dance. For example, one way that this is presented is when we do the swings which is needed to include suspension while the swing is being performed. We also have to jump when we swing our arms to the side. In order to present release and suspension within the dance. One way of how to work on my suspension is by practicing more release technique exercises.

Another weakness that I have noticed and have explored is my use of emotion and character within the dance. For example, one way of how that this was explored within the dance is through by not making enough eye contact when performing in front of my teacher or a peer. One way of how I can work on my facial expressions is my directing my energy to one person within the audience or to spot above the mirrors in the dance studio which will allow me to be working on my eye-line and making eye-contact within the audience.

Fan section of Revelations

In today's dance class rehearsals we were going over the dynamics and the facial features that has to be applied to the fan section of Alvin Ailey's dance, "Revelations". It explores the attitudes such as salvation and redemption from living in a vast majority of a white westernised American culture. The exploration of the redemption within the fan section demonstrates on how that black African American women are seen as inferior towards the whole majority of the dominant white American Culture. As, Alvin Ailey wanted to explore on how that African Americans are not treated fairly and equally compared to the rest. This demonstrates on how that Alvin Ailey wanted to prove the assumptions made by White Americans and compose on an challenge through movement that he wanted to explore on. It is the transformation of an social progression from slavery towards freedom and salvation. This section has been described as the dancers desire for deliverance which has been composed on the heart and struggle. Which becomes explored by the  substantial choreography and graphical image that  the dancers are projecting. The fact that there is nine dancers in this section represents a unity and collective of dancers that want to explore representing their race beneath inspection. This section involves gospel high chanted music that all of the dancers performed in.

One of my strengths within this section is the clarity of the movements. For example, I was able to explore this in the means of demonstrating and performing the movements accurately. Also, demonstrated it to a sufficient good degree. By performing the movements in front of the dance studio with the mirrors has helped me present and show my movements more accurately. For example, there are constant balances that speak out the reaching and the aiming of freedom and salvation that the all the dancers want to receive.

Another strength that I have is my use of turn-out. For example, one way that this was explored and demonstrated is through my left leg raising in a releve (demonstrating the turn out position that needs to be applied while our leg being extended and pointed when slowly rising it up). The use of the turn out position is very important when applying it. For instance, of which is very applicable towards the techniques in Revelations that we are learning such as Graham and Horton technique.

The last strength that I have noticed is my placement of my arms and legs. For instance, one way of how this was demonstrated is through making sure that my legs and arms are in line and that they are also in a turn out position. By checking the placement of my arms and legs I am using the dance studio mirrors when recording myself performing the dance. Producing and showing that I am doing and have alignment and further extensions within my legs. Which is demonstrated as one of the key themes and essentials of Alvin Ailey's dance works. Furthermore, the use of Alvin Ailey's extensions are being used to portray a dynamic choreography. Which stimulates a speak of truth and assurance in the faith that they share within the Christianity religion that Alvin Ailey is represented by.

One of the weaknesses that I have noticed is my use of timing. For example, one way that this was shown is through not always reaching the same counts to get into the next movement which everyone is already in. One way of how I can improve on my timing is by self recording myself doing and performing the dance regularly. Also, to go through 8 counts of each movement/phrases while listening to the music to help me identify with the correct counts and rhythmic features which the dance  explores and touches upon throughout.

Another weakness that I have noticed is my use of character within this section. For example, the dancers in this section are meant to show representations of searching and aiming towards having a new life which contains baptism which is illustrated as a form of salvation. One aspect of how I can improve on my use of character is by looking at the video of the fan section. To find out the dancer within the section that I am playing to see and capture how there facial expressions and character is applied. Then, I should self-record myself to see how I have made improvements.

The last weakness that I have noticed is my use of isolation's within the dance. For example, one way of how this was shown is through when we had to isolate our head whilst holding the fan in front of us. When doing the isolated tilt of our head to represent the technique influences of graham technique that Alvin Ailey thought was crucial within his piece of dance. I am going to be working and improving on my use of isolation's within the dance is by practicing exercises of graham technique i.e. deep stretches/prances.

Practicing Sinnerman section of Revelations

Within our practical dance class time rehearsals we have been working on the trio section of Sinnerman. This section explores the concept of baptism, which is represented as a form of salvation. Alvin Ailey uses this within his dance as a form of being saved by "God" and making sure that you go to heaven. Some of the main aspects that we have to include within Sinnerman is extensions, suspension, contractions and isolation's within our body. In addition, that the movements are done in the right placement. The beginning of Sinnerman explores on how the African Americans are restricted and feel some sort of entrapment as though they are trapped in a cage or an box. Furthermore, when the first solo within Sinnerman begins it explores the African Americans being free and are living very happy in doing what they want to do. Some of the dynamic features and qualities of the dance requires us to be very upbeat and energetic corresponding with the music.

One of the strengths that I have noticed is my use of expression within the dance piece. For example, one way that this was explored is through how I was showing my character throughout the dance. As, someone who is trying to escape within the painful reality of  living within an westernized white American Culture and atmosphere. In addition, the solo can connote on how that one person is able to break out of the chain of the trio to do their own personalized thing and break free. The use of facial expression has allowed me to show more passion and expression within Sinnerman.

Another strength that I have noticed is my leg extensions. For example, this was explored within sinnerman as I applied it to my leg extension turns and use the form of gravity. In order, to allow my extensions to move and take me to places. Which I wanted to explore within "Sinnerman". Long arm and leg extension was seen as the key aspect which Alvin Ailey applied to his dance works. The use of my high releases and extensions represented within this piece to explore the reaching out for freedom. Each extension that I used is represented within this piece to finish the path of getting freedom.

The last strength that I have noticed is my placement and clarity of movements. For example, one way of how this was explored is through by performing the leaps and turns within sinnerman in the right turn out and placement of where the movement is meant to be performed on stage and placed within the correct. One element that is helping me with the clarity of the movement is practicing it with the mirrors within the dance studio to help with the positioning of arms and legs.

One of the weaknesses that I have recognised is the use of my contractions. For example, this was explored within the isolated movements such as the lunge contraction movement. This needed incorporation of graham technique which is meant to be represented within Alvin Ailey's work. One way of how I can improve and work on my contractions is by practicing more of graham technique exercises such as footwork with spirals and contractions or graham plies.

Another weakness that I have noticed is my finishing of the movements. For example, one element of how this was presented is through by rushing some of the movements i.e. when we go into the box splits into the turn. As, I need to make sure that I am not rushing through the movements or that I am going too slow and unable to keep up with the counts. One way of how I am going to be improving on this is by practicing the movements in the section and make sure that I finish the movements in time with the music.

The last weakness that I have noticed is my timing within this section. For instance, within the sinnerman section we all as dancers need to have good stamina within this section. We have to make sure that we are moving quickly. As, the dynamics of this dance is very quick and sharp whilst having the contemporary elements of suspension. One element of how I am going to be working on my timing is by self-recording and evaluating on my timing to see if I am musically moving with the music.

evaluation of rehearsals

In today's dance class rehearsals we were working on the second image from the 80's film (The Breakfast Club). Which consists on us using the release dance technique that meant to be conveyed ans illustrated within the dance piece. The dance piece is meant to be uplifted and upbeat. The essence of the dance that we need to explore is a sense of us illustrating that we are conforming/rebelling through the rules. Which needs to  be explored through the dynamic field of every movement.

One of the strengths that I have noticed is the use of my suspension within the dance. For example, this is being conveyed through the use of my contact movement when I lean on another dancers leg while jumping and suspending my left arm and leg. With he use of a clear elevation and extension between both my arm and leg. Suspension within the dance piece would help me with core and upper body within the dance. Furthermore, that it would help me with my jumps and leaps.

Another strength that I have depicted from the dance is  my sensitivity to other dancers. For example, this has been represented through by watching out the space and being awareness of my spacial surroundings. During class time rehearsals that I do a pathway of where I am suppose to be moving and travelling throughout the dance. The use of spacial awareness between the dancers around me has helped with self- application as a dancer. Also, it allows me to demonstrate the health and safety precautions as an dancer.

The other strength that I have recognised is the clarity of movements and technique that has been applied to my dancing. For instance, one element of how that this is represented is through by performing a large repertoire of movements with the infusion of release technique conveyed in contemporary dance. By making my movement clear has helped me with accuracy of technique that is applied to every movement.

One of my weaknesses that I have recognised within the dance rehearsals is the use of my connection with the music. For example, this has been conveyed through how I need to connect my movement with the music. Which is illustrating how I need to present and display the movement in a much faster dynamic speed with the convention of clean and clear self-enhancement and expression.

Another weakness that I have noticed is styling the movement that has been given to me when performing. One element, of how this is explored is by the characteristics and features of quick, sharp and release/suspension within the dance. One way of how I can improve on the styling of the dance is by practicing techniques such as improvisation in the dance styles that we are studying. Then, at the end of the improvisation that I should self-record myself doing the dance. To see and explore if I have gradually made any improvements with the styling and the use of my body.

The last weakness that I have identified is not being self- recorded enough in dance to evaluate on my performance. By not being videoed enough has not allowed me to self reflect on what I need to do in order to make the dance more dynamic and to the standard that this dance is meant to be showing with release. For instance, by self-recording myself at the end of each lesson will allow me to recognise that my body movement and arms are being conveyed to the full extension that this dance is meant to be represented by.

Learning fan section of "sinnerman"

In today's dance rehearsals we were starting to learn the fan section of "Revelations" which is being used to correspond on how there is a journey through the African American spiritual music and dancing. Which is being communicated through all African American females dancing in this section. It explores the revenue of how the dancers are trying to face the struggles of being in a harsh American  culture. It explores on the contemporary dance in a modern form that is suited with the influence of gospel music. It forms a conduct of being transported from one place to another with the influence of its artistry stylistic qualities of salvation and searching out to find hope and freedom within a consolidated society. It is an exploration of grief and joy being explored through the dynamic features of a sense of strain and weight that has been lifted amongst the dancers.

One of my strengths that I have noticed is my use of the turn out position. For example, one way of how this is presented is when we slowly sit on our stalls in the second position. As, I was using my plie to gradually get into the position. To show the use of my contemporary dance technique that has been applied through the dance of "Revelations. The use of my plie will help with the whole use of the upper body(torso) that is being used within all of Alvin Ailey's dance work. The use of the upper body in Alvin Ailey's work is illustrated that the dancers are trying to look out for light or a spark of hope which they are looking up towards.

Another strength that I have recognised is my use of arm lines and arm extensions. For instance, one way that this is being conveyed is through extending both of my arms and with the use of the prop, "the fan". I have demonstrated connection with the use of the prop to show the enhanced meaning of how the dancer has so much weight on their shoulders. The fan is being used as an element of an barrier which they are trying to escape from. Which they are trying to convey out  with the fan. The yearning of struggling within an American culture has has come to life through the use of movement.

The last strength that I have recognised is my leg turn out and extension. For instance, this is displayed through extending my right leg and my left is bent(in a lunge on the stall). The significance of having leg extensions in Alvin Ailey's dance piece is Alvin Ailey wants to explore on how life is a struggle and it can disinherit you to move forward. The influence of the music has allowed me to explore the sense of not giving out and reaching as high as possible.

One of the weaknesses that I have noticed is my use of timing within the dance piece. For example, one way of how this is being explored is through spending too much time on some of the movements such as when lifting the fan up and going around in a circle on the stall with the fan. An improvement on how I can work on my timing is through by moving with the beats of the music. Which can be worked on by self recording myself at the end of each lesson for six weeks to recognise on how that my timing has improved. My body needs to be allowed to feel to the music.

Another weakness that I have noticed is the use of my dynamics. For example, I need to explore the whole concept of how that the essence of this section is that once you have been baptized. It shows that you have been submerged and entered into an new life. The beauty of "Revelations" is meant to captivate us in an sense of how in a new life that all you ever choose to seek for is an sense of hope and forgiveness from God.

The ;last weakness that I have noticed is my use of self-expression within this section of "Revelations". For example, one way that I have not included in self-expressions is the means of using my face to explore the characteristics and meanings to how that you should not run away from your own salvation. My facial features needs to have the energy of how that the African Americans should be able to state their own opinions and self-express on who they are and what they are going through as the African American citizens that they are.

self reflective note of dance rehearsals

In today's dance class we were learning new sequence in our groups of trios and duets with the infuse of release and contemporary dance technique. One of my strengths was my use of flexibility with the influence of my extensions in my arms. For instance, one way of how this was applied was through when I had to lift my left arm while doing a press up jump in the air(with the help of legs extended out).

Another strength that I have noticed is the use of my core muscles. For example, one way of how this was applied through the use of being able to keep my posture straight and higher up. Furthermore, to also sustain my jumps and turns more by the help of my core. Which furthermore helped me with my use of control and balance within the dance piece. As, it uses a lot of the attitudes that come from that.

The last strength that I have noticed is the use of my coordination. For example, the use of my coordination was applied through being able to place my arms and legs in the correct position. Practicing the dance sequence with the mirrors has helped me with my coordination of my arms and my legs. It has significantly helped me with the placement within the dance sequence. Therefore, it is helping me with the clarity of the movements.

One of the weaknesses that I have noticed is the use of my mood and facial features applied to performances. For example, when I am performing and dancing I am focusing more on the movements than applying my facial expressions within the dance. One way of how I could improve on this is through using the mirror more within the dance studio to check if I am applying those faical features and expressions within the dance. By applying facial features to the dance will change the whole concept and meaning of the dance.

Another weakness that I have identified is my timing. For example, there are some movements such as swinging on the floor or a fast upbeat high jump. It is shown that I am not doing the movements with a faster dynamic. One way of how I can improve on my timing is by practicing more on the choreography and working on my dance and working out the dynamics and interpretation of each movement.

The last weakness that I noticed is my posture. For example, when we have to extend our right leg and lean towards the left side. The use of the parallel position within going into the suspension/off balance movements. One way of how I can improve on my posture is to do more plie/core exercises which helps me with my posture which will allow my jumps and turns to be more clear.

Overview of applying release technique

Today in dance class during the rehearsal process I was working on my use of release dance technique. As, I was applying and doing practice release technique exercises to help me go into the release jumps and turns that were being presented and performed. The extreme influence of applying release technique in contemporary is significantly important as it demonstrates my technical and interpretative skills as well as the performance skills such as facial expressions and use of high release with projection.

Another strength during the class rehearsals is my use of contemporary dance technique  applied to my work. For example, one aspect of how I applied the use of contemporary technique is by performing turns such as attitude and cartwheel turns. As, I was able to perform the movements with a good degree of accuracy and clarity. This signifies on how I am able to have a good placement of where my arms and legs are suppose to be positioned. Furthermore, this could show on how I am confident within what I do. As, confidence is one of the key essentials and quality that any dance requires of.

Furthermore, other strengths that in my rehearsals is my use of leg extensions. For example, this is presented when I have to lift my leg in a needle position on the floor and performed the cartwheel jump. This was represented as an strength as I have been going to extra dance classes to work on my flexibility. Also, I have been stretching regularly to work on my flexibility and position/angle of my legs.

One of my weaknesses that I have noticed is my use of facial features. For example, during class rehearsals I am not sure of how I am able to apply my facial features towards my movements. One element of how I am meant to be improving on this is by doing more auditions and dance shows. As, that would help me develop on my facial features and mood which will be reflected and adaption within the dance piece.

Another weakness that I have noticed is my spacial awareness around the dancers around me. For instance, I would make my movements too big or travel too much whilst being surrounded by the dancers around me. One way of how I can improve and work on this is by doing a path of where I am meant to be(the area of space I use and to self-record myself at the end of each dance lesson). To see how I am using the space.

The last weakness that I have noticed is my use of memory of dance combinations. For example, in class rehearsals when I am taught a movement sometimes I am getting the combination of the movement not correctly i.e. step right, left back right left. One way and element of how I can improve on this is by going through the movements in small sections i.e. every 8 counts go through and define the movement(movement clarity).

Analyzing strengths and weaknesses of "pilgrim of sorrow" section

In dance rehearsals one of the identifications of the strength in this piece is the general shape of the dance. For example, the formations of the piece is reflective to the one that we had to see of this section of "Revelations". At the beginning there was a use of space between all of us as dancers. Which was expected for Revelations, as Alvin Ailey's intentions was for the dancers to reach out and use elements such as extensions to see how far they can go. To what extent that they can aim for. The extensions within Alvin Ailey's work signifies on how African Americans were having a struggle of not being considered or treated as fairly and equally. Alvin Ailey wanted to explore the entrapment and isolation in which that he knew that he had experience within his childhood.

Another strength which was recognisable is use of plies. For example, in the beginning of the section when we had to bend down in a lunge in second position using arm extensions. Which could connote on how there is this foreboding effect of there being a barrier of the dancers being able to reach and come out of the box. This creates the whole idea of how that there is no way out. As, the movements are very contained as it demonstrates an attitude of having a certain limitation. Which Alvin Ailey had thought that he had.

The last strength that I noticed within us practicing the dance is the relationship between everyone as dancers. For example, I explore the attitudes of unity with the surroundings of all the dancers. Which is one of Alvin Ailey's key aspects of the dance is the use of unity and unison. To show that all of us as dancers are together as one. It explores the concepts and attitudes of how if one person does not do it at the same time it does not seem as a whole. The use of unity symbolises a force of protest which Alvin Ailey wanted to explore within the dance. He wanted to demonstrate on how Black African Americans were treated nothing but animals. The reason why he wanted to modern dance and the hardship of slavery and going to church to build and create an story.

One of the weaknesses that I have noticed is the placement of my arms. For example, when we had to put our arms up on a straight line when were in first position. Not all of us had our arm in the right placement, some of our arms were too high up or very low down. One way of how I can improve the placement of my arms is by doing exercises such as putting my arms in first position and second position within the contemporary dance style. Also, doing this while using the mirrors in the dance studio would help with placement of the arms.

Another weakness that I have identified is the use of dynamics. For example, when I was doing the turns I need to use more control and be counting out of when I do the turns. This shows that when practicing my movements within the dance that I need to sustain the movements more. In addition, making sure that the movements are sustained and a good use of the core and torso. That was required within Alvin Ailey's dance piece.

The last weakness that I have identified is my use of timing within the piece. For example, I was behind when we had to do the repetition of the motif in the beginning. As, I was drawing through my movements. This demonstrates on how I was rushing some of the movements or I was doing some of the movements on more counts than others. The use of the repetition of the motif shows more of a symbolic element of restriction and containment. As, the movements become more drained out. One element of how I can improve on my timing is by going through the first section in different parts and doing eight counts at a time. To help structure with the timing and the clarity of the movements.

self reflective note on dance rehearsals for Alvin Ailey

Today in dance class we were exploring the concepts and attitudes of Revelations within the section of "pilgrim of sorrow". This section we had to discover the continuous journey of how Revelations tells a story of how African Americans have faith and are trying to seek out for help and forgiveness. Which forebodes on some of the key elements and themes such as a shift from freedom to slavery. Through us as the dancers presenting the emotions and the feeling towards the whole dynamical aspect and field of wanting spiritual healing and forgiveness from God. On the contrary, feel imprisoned and trapped within a white western American atmosphere and environment. For example, when I had to reach out with my right arm while going into a lunge in second position. To show how I am using key elements of Alvin Ailey's dance of extensions. Which I am using to suggest on how that I have to demonstrate the persecution of the movement and that I am using the movement to search out for forgiveness and hope for  the best within the world.

In the section, "pilgrim of sorrow" I showed demonstrations of Alvin Ailey's technique(i.e. Graham technique). For example, I presented this when going into the attitude position turn which we had to sustain with balance and control. Which are known as some of the key aspects of Alvin Ailey's dance. Alvin Ailey included several off-balance turns and holds. It builds on the whole idea of modern dance that is incorporated through the Horton modern dance technique. Which Alvin Ailey thought that it was essential to include within his dance work. The section of this dance work has explained how there is a life cycle which starts from birth then later on enters into death. That Alvin Ailey explored from incorporating baptism and church services that he went to and experienced within his life time.

Another element that I presented in this section is my use of gravity. For example, this was shown when I had to use the other dancers weight to suspend my whole body. While, holding onto their hands and extending my legs out. This was to represent on how that I am using the centre of my body to hold my weight. Such as, my torso and inner core. Having the use of the centre of my body is known as an very important part of Alvin Ailey's dance piece with the incorporation of modern dance technique which was applied.

In the this section,  I could of used more elevation within this section. For example, this was presented when I was going into the attitude position. The turn could of been presented with more of an higher lift within my turn. One way of how I can improve my use of elevation is by practicing more of the contemporary exercises such as plies and raises to help with my hold within the hold and sustain of when going into a balance or an off-balanced movement.

Another element that I have recognised for an improvements is my use of facial features towards the whole aspect and dynamical field of the dance. For example, this was presented throughout the first section of the dance when I am having a explorative sense of movement. However, the use of facial features and emotions are not portraying/matching the intention and meaning behind the whole dance. One way of how I am going to be improving on the facial expressions is by auditioning for East London Dance Youth Company. Which would help me build and work on my facial expressions and being able to use them in dance.

Applying contemporary dance work

In today's dance class, we had to explore the attitudes of release technique within the modern dance style of contemporary dance. One of my strengths was extensions through my arms and legs. For example, this was presented when I done my one legged handstand. As, I had to extend my left leg towards the ceiling with my feet pointed. To demonstrate the physical qualities and features of contemporary dance technique.

Another strength that I noticed was my use of dynamics. For example, this was presented when the theme of the dance is the 80's that the movements are meant to be presented as fluent and upbeat/tempo. In relations to the concept of dynamics, the sense of quality perpetuates to the rhythmic field of dynamics that concepts towards the whole dance of the 80's theme base. Which creates elements of different speeds and ongoing tempos of the dance.

My last strength that I noticed was is my use of control when applying the technique. For example, this was represented when i was doing the one handed handstand and the leap jump. While, performing these jumps I had to elements such as spotting where my legs go during that part of the dance sequence.

One of my weaknesses that I noticed was the essence of throwing myself in the dance piece. For example, when going down in first position going down and bending my body towards the front. One way of how I can improve on this is by going to more ballet classes which allows me to use my torso more which will help me go lower when I am applying and using release technique.

Another weakness that I recognised was my use of the gravity which wasn't applied enough to some of my dance. For example, this was shown when I'm doing the one handed handstand that my whole body should be more light and fluent. One aspect of how I am going to be working on this is by using the floor more to go through the movements such as doing more pre release exercises before doing the piece.

Evaluating strengths and weaknesses of performing Alvin Ailey

In today's dance class we were learning and practicing the section of "pilgrim of sorrow" in which we had to use Alvin Aileys stylistic qualities such as extensions and the use of the application of graham technique. Which includes some of the elements i.e. contractions which is key for us to explore through "Revelation". For example, the lunge we do in the beginning in wide second position and our arm is reaching out. I have to demonstrate that the movement explores the connotations and the adaptions of reaching out and searching out towards heaven and escaping the life full of sins. I need to work on and use my plies more when reaching out with my arm. To portray my use of full of extension and the dynamic quality of Incorporated contemporary technique. Furthermore, to decrepitude the beginning of the journey that Alvin Ailey wanted to display. One of my strengths included the use of flexibility. For example, I extended my movement to the furthest that it could go. To show I was able to apply physical qualities of dance for the dance work "Revelations".

Another strength that I noticed was extensions through my arms. For example, this was shown when I had to reach my arm out towards one of the dancers while going into a needle position. Extension could forebode in Alvin Aileys dance that you have to reach so far that you could even feel it in your veins. The other strength that I noticed in the dance is the use of the space. For example, this was explored when I was using my movement to travel within a pathway, not only forwards and backwards. As, for instance Alvin Ailey expected his dancers to be travelling and using the space.

One of my weaknesses that I noticed was timing. For example, I noticed this when that I realized when we had that improvisation of fast like movements that the counts were quick. So, I had to make sure that I was able to follow the counts while completing all of my movements. One way of how I could work on timing is video recording myself at the end of each lesson to see if im following the dance rhythmically and fluently.

Another weakness that I noticed was my use of musicality. For example, this was noticed when I started doing the first part of the sequence, "pilgrim of sorrow" I was rushing when I was extending my arm in a plie second position. It was presented that I should go with the music, representing the pain and sorrow that the dance piece is attending on the dance section. As, the section is being explored more pain should be released through the movements.

How I applied contemporary dance technique in my dance work

One of the strengths that I applied in my contemporary dance is the use of release technique. For example, when I was in first position when I had to suspense my whole body towards the front. One of the main applicants in applying release technique is to throw yourself(allow your body to let go). My release technique has improved by practicing more release technique exercises and evaluating myself through looking at the mirrors in the dance studio to see if I am applying the technique. Of which that is required in the dance work/piece.

Another strength that I had was my use of strong lines. For example, when going in a diagonal turn my arms are in a diagonal and it is straight. Also, I am using suspension when I am turning to create more of an diagonal turn/spin. I have been working on my turns by practicing more turns and jumps in the dance studio to help me with my suspension. Which is one of the key elements that I need to apply to release technique movements and exercises.

Furthermore, one of the key identifications that I picked out through my class rehearsal is my use of extending through my movements. For example, this was shown through doing the reaching out lunge with extensions of my arms. This suggests that I am presenting aspects of release technique and fluency.  This is because I have been working on my strength through my arms by practicing exercises such as turns and side leaps.

One of my weaknesses that I noticed was rushing through some of the movements. For example, in the beginning when I was doing the cartwheel jump,  I rushed during the jump, as I am suppose to flow through the jump and to follow the movement through my legs and arms. The jump is suppose to have suspension in it(as aspect of release technique that is required).

Another weakness that I captured was sense of mood. For example, this was presented when I am showing the movements with the correct use of technique and extensions. However, the feeling and meaning of the dance through my facial features was not captured. One aspect of how I am going to improve on this is by recording myself regularly and practicing the dance in the mirror to see how I can apply the facial aspects.

Self evaluation of Alvin Ailey, "sinnerman"

One of the strengths that I had was my extensions through my legs and arms. For example, this was shown when I was doing the leaps and the leg kicks, I was applying the stylistic qualities of Alvin Aileys dance work, "Revelations". The extensions that I showed in Alvin Ailey's work suggests and implies how you have to try and reach for hope and salvation. Hope was the only way you will be able to escape is to reach out and ask God for forgiveness of all problems and mistakes that us humans have done. Which Alvin Ailey is trying to present and shown through Revelations.

Another strength that I had was flexibility. For example, my use of flexibility has helped me with my jumps and turns. Having good flexibility is an very important part of Alvin Ailey's dance work, "Revelations". Flexibility is one of Alvin Ailey's key stylistic qualities for Revelations. Of which this helps out with the clarity of lines through the arms and legs. Furthermore, by having long lines through the legs and arms it enhances the movement that is being carried out to an extent. One of the purposes of Alvin Ailey's dance is that you have to go out to a place where you can not feel comfortable anymore. It emphasizes of how in my movements that all movements should be carried out to an degree.

In addition, the other strength that I have noticed is my strength. For example, this was shown through having leg strength in my leaps. Strength is one of the key aspects as dancing to "Revelations". To explore a clear communication of divinity and power through the most humanly for possible. Having good strength has helped me maintained and have good control. My control helps with other areas such as my extensions and flexibility.

One of the weaknesses that I had is my use of contraction. For example, this was represented through the lunge push out movement. Contraction is apart of Alvin Ailey's stylistic qualities(contraction is Graham technique) that we have to apply to Revelations. I have to improve on my contraction through using the centre of my body more and to push out the body's sense of gravity.

Another weakness that I had is my use of upper body. For example, this was shown when I done the side leaps, which I needed to use my upper body. By me improving on my upper body, such as working on my leaps and jumps will help me with my use of gravity. The key use of upper body is very important for Alvin Aileys work, Revelations and to use also the ballectic lower part of the body. For example, to articulate my feet, to elevate our upper body and etc.

My last weakness that I noticed was my use of fluency. For example, this was represented through me rushing and going through my movements quickly. Apart of Alvin Ailey's stylistic qualties is to go through movements with passion and strength. Every movement has to be explored with the connection of the music and the flow of each movement together as one. The use of fluency will help me with Alvin Ailey's work and to perform it with the degree that it is suppose to be.

Strengths and weaknesses for applying contemporary dance technique

One of my strengths was my use of rhythmical sense while doing the release technique exercise. For example, this was presented as I was able to be able to follow the counts of the dance. Also, being able to go along with the music. Which shows how I have a strong use of musicality through out performing. Furthermore, it establishes that I am easily able to pick up the counts and timing of the sequence

Another strength which I had was physical features. For example, I was able to represent this through being able to perform technique features coming from contemporary dance. For example, leaps, pirouettes, attitude turn and etc. This suggests that going to extra technique classes has really helped my physical features become more improved.

One of the strengths that was represented when applying contemporary dance technique is my use of strength. For example, this was represented as of how I have safety over other dancers i.e. making sure that I lift someone in the right position. Having a good use of strength came from having a strong core. This of which came from practicing core exercises such as planks, crunches and etc.

In contrast, one of my weaknesses was my mood/use of facial features. For example, when practicing the set example of the sequence of release technique. During this practice I was presenting the movements correctly. However, I was not showing any emotion or facial expression during it. One way of how I am going to improve this is by auditioning for the musical, "hairspray" at college. Which will allow me to correspond my sense of mood with the movement within a sequence or a dance piece.

One of my other weaknesses was my use of gravity. For example, this was representing when doing the sequence. As, I did not have enough balance while performing the technical aspects of applying contemporary dance. Such as doing off-balance movements. Through the use of doing this will help me strengthen my legs in order to maintain and sustain balance. In hence to increase the suspension given out. Which is required in release technique exercises.

My last weakness that I captured during class rehearsals is my use of suspension. For example, when I was doing some release technique exercises but I was not throwing myself enough. For this reason I would need to put into the effort of quality required for the execution of the movement. I am going to be improving my use of suspension by practicing jumps from the corner in the dance studio. Furthermore, I am going to use in the mirror in order to help me see if i am heaving myself.

Strengths and Weaknesses of learning rep from "sinnerman" in Revelations

One of my strengths included the use of the stylistic qualities implied into the section, "sinnerman" such as contractions or off-balanced movements. To show how I implied these stylistic features which was required for Alvin Ailey's work. For example, when I'm in the off-balanced "T" position I hold the position in a diagonal line. Also, using suspension which was one of Alvin Ailey's qualities in his work, "Revelations" and also making sure that the movements have long extensions(all the movements are completely finished and the movements are reaching out. Reaching out as if you are reaching for God to forgive you for all of your sins and mistakes that you have done as a person. The use of doing core exercises helped with the off-balanced movement. This is because that in contemporary dance that you have to engage and use your core muscles to hold and sustain off-balance position.

Another strength is my long extensions through my legs and arms(they were shown and represented through the use of finishing every movement). Also, reaching out and aiming for something more that you thought you could not do. This was implied through Alvin Ailey's stylistic qualities. The use of my extensions demonstrated in Alvin Ailey's work portrayed the meaning of how it exhibits the hardship of salvation and reconstruction. The use of me stretching helped with my long extensions. As, my stretching it is allowing your body to slowly progress and reach further through your movements.

Furthermore, another identification of which was good representation of when performing the rep of "sinnerman" is timing. For example, this was presented as of us were in sync with each other. Going with the music in time showing a sense of musicality which is a stylistic quality. Which is meant to be presented in Alvin Ailey's work.

One of my weaknesses is not to be rushing any of the movements and going with the music. For example, throughout the dance some of my movements were not finished i.e. the lunges/reaching out. As, I didn't use enough of Alvin Ailey's stylistic qualities which included extension and contraction. Contraction and extensions are seen as an essential in Alvin Ailey's piece. It suggests that Alvin Ailey wants to use movements in order to reach for God and heaven. God is being used to symbolize a hierarchy to reach up to.

Another weakness that I noticed is my use of space. For example, I was noticing when I was dancing that I was only using a small section of the stage and I was not travelling in a pathway. One way of how I am going to improve is to look in the mirror to see how I am using the spacing while practicing and performing the dance. In order, for my movements to relate back to Alvin Ailey's aspects and portrayal of dance and the technique and emotion behind it.

In conclusion, my last weakness is the use of facial features during the practice of "sinnerman". For example, this was shown when performed the movements with fluency and control. However, not putting the characteristics of hope and salvation of which Alvin Ailey is representing in his dance work.

Class rehearsal on the dance piece

Today's dance class rehearsal we were going over the timing and the movement of the dance sequence. One of the strengths that I noticed during dance rehearsal is being in time with everyone and having spacial awareness as a dancer(watching the dancers around me). For example, when I was dancing I made sure that I was listening to the music and dancing on the right count. Showing a good sense of musicality and a rhythmical sense of movement and timing.

Another strength that I identified is my extensions of my legs and arms. For example, when I do the cartwheel jump my legs are extended through in a split position with my legs pointed. I have been improving my leg extension by stretching more in the splits position and going to regular technique classes.

Furthermore, another strength that I recognised was memory of movements. For example, in class rehearsal I am able to pick up the movements very quickly and apply them with the correct technique. As, I present the repertoire of movement full out and being able to dance the style contemporary well.

One of my weaknesses was my posture and use of balance. For example, when I'm in the contemporary stance of the first position. My body tends to be slightly forwards and not straight. A way of how I am going to improve and work on my posture is to go to a ballet class and working on my plies.

Another weakness that I noticed was elevation. For example, when I am turning I need to be on the ends of my toe. I am going to be improving my elevation by practicing jumps in full and demi plie and to rise and hold the movement to help with height of turns or jumps. Improving on my elevation will also help me with my jumps and my turns such as piruoettes and etc.

One of the other weaknesses that I captured out is my use of release technique. For example, this was shown as my swings and drop downs was stiff. As, I was not throwing myself enough with the movements. One aspect of how I am going to be improving on my release technique is by practicing more release exercises before doing the dance piece. So, that the feeling of releasing myself is captured within the dance.

Analyzing sinnerman, "Alvin Ailey"

This section from Alvin Ailey's work is represented as the powerful men's trio for sinners-men of who are desperate to escape the fires of hell. For example, the use of the off- balanced movements, such as represented when the trio are performing the T shape off-balanced shape on a diagonal. While using some of Alvin Ailey's stylistic qualities such as suspension and alignment. Alvin Ailey shows an implication of these movements used to rather imply the fear of what will happen if you can not be forgiven(it is like an burden that has an explicit rather alert warning which you can not run away from). It creates an metaphorical sense of how it like a weight that you are carrying full of grief and sins. As, you would have to eventually confess and repent from your sins. Hoping that in Gods eyes that you are forgiven from your mistakes. For example, the jumps across large distances of space such as leaps and pirouettes portray the men trying to escape and run away from your problems. This is because of how your problems will always come back to you. Furthermore, the jumps could also connote on how that you have to reach to heaven in order to get/receive any forgiven. Moreover, through the use of the 20th century gospel music infused, which is very upbeat and the strong dynamic field of dynamics. Therefore, the jumps would be very large and uplifting. Forgiveness is being presented as one of the themes of Alvin Ailey's work. It describes on how Alvin Ailey is telling the story of the American Faith experiences from slavery to freedom. The dancers were going in a pathway of space forward and backwards. Through the use of the action running within the pathway. Which could have the implied meaning of how they are seeking for freedom and help. That Alvin Ailey was trying to convey through his work as he had an hard life as of being in the Black American Culture. For example, they were not given as many opportunities or chances. Which Alvin Ailey wanted to present through his piece of the struggles and the salvation of which African American Culture are facing such as acceptance into society. The use of the reaching out movements on the floor demonstrates his infusion of graham technique. That he incorporated into his works i.e. Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Jose Limon. The portrayal meaning and desire of the section, "sinnerman" is aimed to show a mesmerizing and captivating moment of time when you are reaching for indulgence. Furthermore, this piece reinforces the issues involving around African American Culture and of how that they are treated nothing more than animals. In the eyes of Alvin Ailey and many other African Americans.

How did we as a group explore the stylistic qualities of Alvin Ailey

What are the stylistic qualities of Alvin Ailey?
By Alvin Ailey valuing eclecticism, he created more of a dance style rather than a dance technique.  Some of Alvin Ailey’s stylistic qualities included Martha Graham (both Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey both studied dance together in New York) - contraction and release. Which is Graham technique, this is a modern dance movement style. Furthermore, Alvin Ailey’s use of a variety of teaching and technique (like the one of Katherine Dunham, Lester Horton, Doris Humphrey, and Martha Graham), before creating his own company: The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. One of the main elements of which distinguishes his stylistic qualities in his work the most is the focus on the expression on black people’s feelings. “Revelations” is considered as a master piece that gathers his most renowned aesthetical choices such as lyricism, use of ethnic music, Graham technique, and spirituality also revolutionary ambience.

One of the ways in which we included aspects of stylistic qualities from Alvin Ailey works is contractions. For example, all of us in unison rippled with our arms and right leg towards the right side. In the direction of the left side. Another aspect of stylistic qualities that we included in our choreography is arm extensions. For example, this was demonstrated in the section of when all of us brought our arms to the front on the left side (our arms were slowly coming up). While, our right leg is the front of the left.
